Home.
Home is the working title for the sequel to The Green Man. Below is a very brief taster, taken from the opening paragraphs:-
The man sat alone on a moss- covered old log, gazing contentedly at the westering sun.
As it’s dull orange orb slid gently down the sky, he gradually became aware of a pot- bellied, grubby child watching him in silent concentration.
‘Shoo!’ the man said, ‘Go away, I’m busy here.’
The child watched carefully, scratched his belly, then smiled knowingly. A thick mop of dark curls fell across his smudged face.
‘You’re not busy! Mother says come in for tea and stop daydreaming.’
Nick feigned shock. ‘Daydreaming! Me?!’
The boy giggled. ‘Daddy, you are funny. Come and eat, I’m hungry.’
Nick smiled. ‘You’re always hungry Giles. Tell you what, you come and give your Dad a hug, and I’ll come for tea. Deal?’
The boy made a show of rolling his eyes, but Nick could see his secret pleasure. He ambled up to Nick and threw his arms carelessly around his neck. Nick enfolded the small form, hugging him fiercely.
‘Tell your Mother I’ll be along in a minute.’ He kissed the boy on top of his head, and swatted playfully at his behind as he scampered away.
Nick watched him go for a moment smiling, then turned his face to the iridescent radiance that filled the western sky. Another sun sets on Albion Giles, he thought sadly. I wish you were here to sit and share it with me.
